Principal's Update

Tell Them from Me

As our focus on more engaged classrooms and the building of more positive relationships continues as a 2025 goal, I am pleased to see our Tell Them From Me score for positive behaviour has moved into the 90% club, with an increase over the past 12 months. I can certainly feel this impact when walking through the college and chatting with students from all 6 years.

Julianna Demetrius

As National Child Protection Week draws to a close, I thought it essential to inform parents that the college has this week begun the first steps in engaging an external review of our policies and practices around child safeguarding. A number of staff across our system have been engaged in quite extensive interviews around safeguarding, with the objective of ensuring all students are safe and supported whilst at our college. Ms Julianna Demetrius is leading the review from the Demetrius Consulting firm. I have included Julianna’s professional biography below.

I look forward to hearing the recommendations and outcomes of this review process.

Prior to establishing her own safeguarding practice, Julianna Demetrius was a member of the NSW Ombudsman’s executive team for 12 years. In her role as Deputy Ombudsman, Employment Related Child Division, Julianna was responsible for oversighting the handling of child abuse allegations and building the capacity of agencies to establish and maintain systems for preventing, detecting and responding to reportable conduct, including the delivery of an extensive training program.

Julianna was involved in progressing the implementation of the recommendations from the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse and advised WA, VIC and the ACT on the establishment of their reportable conduct schemes. She was also engaged by the National Office of Child Safety to develop guidance for organisations to adopt a child-focused approach to responding to complaints. In her previous role as Assistant Ombudsman, Julianna led the Ombudsman’s response to the Royal Commission between 2013 and 2017, as well as the Ombudsman’s systemic child and family work.

In her private consultancy, Julianna is engaged by a wide range of government agencies and NGOs (primarily schools, faith bodies and OOHC agencies) to conduct investigations into allegations of child abuse and safeguarding audits. Between 2021 and 2023, Julianna was engaged by the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability, as a Special Advisor on independent oversight and complaint mechanisms. Julianna has also been engaged by the Aged Care Quality Commission to develop investigation guidance relating to abuse in aged care settings and training for Commission staff.

Julianna was admitted as a solicitor to the Supreme Court of NSW in 1999.

Maggie Dent

Last week, I highlighted some key times to avoid when communicating effectively with your teens. This week, I want to highlight the importance of “connection over perfection” when forming positive, trusting relationships with your children. Some areas to focus on include:

  • Remember, connection is the goal. Connect first, build trust and then work on small shifts in behaviour change.

  • Your presence matters more than perfection. Be there and be present. Perfection is a lovely ideology, but can be very hard to achieve. Celebrate and reinforce the small wins.

  • Connection isn't immediate or necessarily easy to develop; parents need to be intentional and creative when working on connection with their teen.

Student Success

I recently had the pleasure of seeing the exceptional talent of our HSC creative arts students. Over two nights, our Drama, Music, and Visual Arts students showcased their HSC major works to members of our college community, including staff, students, parents, and grandparents (and one great-grandparent). The talent was not only diverse but truly remarkable, and I have no doubt many of these pieces will receive nominations to be showcased as outstanding HSC exemplars for 2025.

We recently had the pleasure of receiving a very positive phone call about one of our year 11 students, Isobel Galvin. The community member outlined how Isobel stopped everything whilst at Coles one morning to help an elderly man who was quite anxious and flustered about spilling all of his groceries over the floor. Isobel graciously assisted the gentleman and calmly ensured he was okay. Isobel is a true reflection of the amazing young people we have in our college.

Tournament of Minds

Our exceptional Tournament of Minds (TOM) team are off to the State Finals this weekend, after an impressive display of academic excellence at Southern Cross University in Coffs Harbour. 4 teams competed in the tournament, with our STEM junior team and arts team receiving honours, and our STEM senior team and language literature team receiving 1st place!

A big thank you to Ms Abigail Ross for her dedication and guidance of the TOM team. We wish you all the best for this weekend’s finals!

Leaders of Wellbeing: Stage 4

Year 7

Year 7 were spoken to during extended PC this fortnight by our Assistant Principal of Pastoral Care, Stephen Roberts, focusing on building community, one of our core values. A sense of belonging is one of the most powerful protective factors for young people. When students feel accepted and valued by their peers, they are more likely to thrive academically, emotionally and socially. In these early years of high school, many students are seeking a place where they feel safe, understood and connected.

As young teens move away from the security of primary school friendships, they begin exploring new social circles and discovering more about who they are and how they relate to others. It’s a time of self-discovery, but also one where young people are particularly sensitive to how they are perceived by their peers.

At our school, we actively cultivate a culture of community by encouraging inclusive behaviours, promoting mutual respect and fostering genuine relationships. Through pastoral care, house activities and classroom practices, we aim to create environments where every student knows they belong — not only as learners, but also as valued members of a faith-filled and supportive school community.

Year 8 Mass and Catch the Wave Day

This Friday, Year 8 had the opportunity to come together to celebrate a mass focused on our 2025 theme: finding happiness in making others happy.

During our prayer service and Catch the Wave Day, students were invited to think about how they have grown as individuals and built relationships with those around us over this year. It was a time to reflect on how our actions can make a difference in the lives of others and how they have made others happy in their day-to-day interactions.

Students were encouraged to be friends who support, advise and stand by others, just as they would hope others would do for them; embrace the love that Jesus has for them and share it with others; and let God’s love be the guiding force in their friendships and in their lives.

The Catch the Wave Day operated as an introduction and invitation to the work of student discipleship. Young adults working in our secondary colleges as youth ministry officers facilitated the sessions. They played games, gave personal testimonies of their faith journey, and spoke of the opportunities and commitments involved in joining a ministry-focused religious education class. The metaphor of catching a wave was used for students to consider where they are currently in terms of their own faith and where they might wish to be. Thank you to all the students and teacher helpers who made the day so special.

Maintaining Standards

As we start to reach the end of term, I want to emphasise the importance of upholding our standards across all aspects of college life. Many subjects will have assessments or evidence of learning approaching over the next two weeks, and it is important for all students to finish the term with the same enthusiasm and application they started with. Finishing ‘strong’ includes all aspects of college life: attendance, classwork, behaviour and uniform. Students are reminded that they should only be in sport uniform if they have sport or need it for a practical subject and to wear the appropriate uniform correctly. Let’s all contribute to a respectful and disciplined environment at our college.

Leaders of Wellbeing: Stage 5

Guiding with Integrity and Faith

As students start making more of their own decisions, we must help them develop a strong internal compass.

Encouraging them to reflect on questions like:

  • “Does this align with my values?”
  • “Is this the kind of person I want to be?”
  • “What are the consequences of my actions?”

It helps them grow in integrity and accountability. These reflective conversations, especially when grounded in our school's faith traditions and ethical teachings, empower students to make choices that reflect their beliefs and character — even when no one is watching.

At home, you play a crucial role in helping your child navigate these middle school years with integrity and faith. Supporting your child through these middle school years doesn’t mean having all the answers — it means being a steady presence. Here are some ways to help:

  • Stay connected, even when they pull away - They may not always show it, but teens still need to feel close to their parents. Find small, consistent moments to talk, share a meal, or check in.
  • Set clear boundaries with compassion - Structure helps teens feel secure. Be firm, but fair — and always explain the ‘why’ behind your expectations.
  • Celebrate growth, not perfection - Acknowledge effort, courage, and progress. Praise them not just for outcomes, but for showing excellence in their approach to challenges.
  • Model the values you want to see - Your example matters. Show them what it means to live with respect, faith, and integrity, even in everyday interactions.
  • Partner with the school community - Reach out to your child’s teachers, PC teacher or leader of wellbeing if you need guidance. We endeavour to work together in fostering a shared culture of care and accountability.

At school, we have emphasised to students the importance of maintaining their integrity through their words and actions by:

  • arriving at class on time, ready to learn;
  • being mindful of one’s word choices and using inclusive language;
  • keeping their learning spaces clean and tidy – chewing gum is prohibited and from hereon will result in an afternoon detention, given the difficulty in cleaning gum from surfaces in the classroom and playground;
  • making the right choices for themselves and their relationships. Last Friday, Year 10 engaged respectfully and honestly in the education programme – RESPECT (Respect Everyone So People Everywhere Can Thrive) Day. Students were given the opportunity to examine, discuss, and explore respectful relationships in a safe environment. Session topics included attitudes towards relationships, sexual violence and the law, and It’s YOUR Choice. The overall aims of the sessions were to equip our young people with the knowledge needed to have respectful relationships, encourage and develop their skills in critical thinking, and assist them in being able to problem-solve and communicate effectively. We hope you had the chance to discuss this day with your young person and engage in conversation about what they learnt.

Reading Fluency Program – Terms 2 & 3

Over Terms 2 and 3, our Reading Fluency Program has been running before school in the library every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Students from Years 7 to 9 have participated in this initiative, focusing on improving their reading fluency, accuracy, and confidence.

A key feature of the program has been the involvement of our dedicated staff and student volunteers, who generously gave their time to work one-on-one with participating students. These sessions provided valuable opportunities for students to practice reading aloud, develop expression, and cultivate a deeper enjoyment of reading.

The progress we have witnessed has been outstanding not only in reading ability but also in the confidence and motivation of our students. It has been wonderful to see students making real strides through consistent practice.

We extend a huge thank you to all the staff and student volunteers who made this program possible. Your encouragement and commitment have had a lasting impact, and we look forward to building on this success in future terms.

Term 3 Marine Excursions

Whale Migration Season Thrills Students at Port Macquarie

Whale Migration Season is now in full swing, and Port Macquarie remains one of the best vantage points to witness these magnificent marine creatures in their natural habitat.

Recently, Year 10 Marine and Aquaculture students had the incredible opportunity to deepen their understanding of whale behaviour through a hands-on learning experience aboard the Essence. The three-hour excursion provided an unforgettable encounter with dolphins and whales, enriching the students’ classroom knowledge with real-world observation.

The trip's highlight occurred approximately four kilometres off Queens Head, where students observed mother whales teaching their calves vital skills such as breaching and tail slapping. These intimate moments gave the students a rare glimpse into the nurturing behaviours of these majestic animals.

Remarkably, the whales approached the boat closely, coming within just a few meters of the students. The animals responded to the calls and interactions from everyone on board, creating a memorable and interactive wildlife experience.

We extend our sincere gratitude to Mrs.Loretta North for generously accompanying our classes on these aquatic adventures, ensuring a safe and educational journey for all.

Marine and Aquaculture Technology Teacher

Year 9 Marine and Aquaculture Students Dive into the World of Sharks and Rays at Anna Bay

Over the past month, Year 9 Marine and Aquaculture Technology classes had the exciting opportunity to visit the Irukandji Shark and Ray Centre in Anna Bay. This immersive experience allowed students to engage directly with the fascinating marine life of sharks and stingrays, enhancing their understanding beyond the classroom.

During the visit, students explored sharks' and rays' biology and survival strategies in both oceanic and riverine environments. They learned about the unique adaptations enabling these creatures to thrive and their critical role in marine ecosystems.

The program also highlighted pressing environmental challenges. Students gained insight into how human population growth and climate change have impacted sharks and rays, forcing these species to adapt remarkably to shifting habitats and conditions.

A particularly memorable aspect of the experience was the hands-on opportunity for students to swim with sharks and rays in two distinct settings an enclosed environment and an outdoor habitat. This direct interaction showcased the delicate balance between humans and marine wildlife and emphasised the importance of conservation and responsible environmental stewardship.

We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Mrs. Loretta North for accompanying our classes on this educational and inspiring aquatic adventure.
