Principal's Update

Tell Them from Me
Our 2024-2025 Tell Them From Me Data has arrived at the college, and I am proud to say that we have had significant increases in several key areas. One focus area of our School Annual Improvement Plan was to increase our students' sense of belonging. Our year-to-date data has shown a huge 6 per cent increase in growth, with the most significant increase occurring in our Year 8-10 students. I believe this growth has been attributed to the energy created by our new House Structure and our professional learning around positive relationships.
Maggie Dent
In her book “Help Me, Help My Teen”, Maggie Dent reinforces the need for communication with our children. When our young people are so immersed in the negativity of peers and social media, it is essential that, as parents, we find every opportunity to affirm our children. This affirmation needs to be sincere and timely. She reinforces the most appropriate time to communicate with our children and the times we should avoid. These include:
- When you’re upset, especially angry
- In the heat of the moment
- Before you have all the information or the full story
- At breakfast, when kids are often still half asleep
- Right after school
- While they are watching a TV show
- If they are busy on a device, gaming or watching other people gaming on YouTube
- When anyone else is in earshot
- When they are hungry or while they are eating
- When they are tired
- When they are having a growth spurt
- Within hours of a significant misdemeanour
- Within 24 hours of a public misdemeanour
- Within a day of having returned home from a sleepover or a school camp
- On their birthday/special family day
- Just before visitors arrive.
Staff Professional Learning Day
A reminder to families that Monday, 1st September (Week 7) will be a pupil-free day as staff engage in Professional Learning. Staff will be refining their work on behaviour and student engagement whilst also working through our new LEARN pedagogical framework to be implemented across the college in 2026. The LEARN framework closely aligns with the work done by Barak Rosenshine and his 10 Principles of Instruction. This day concludes with our Staff/ Student/Parent - Learning Conversations, beginning at 2.00 pm.
Parent Webinars
Please see the three links below to some upcoming parent webinars. All three topics are crucial in the formation of flourishing young people. In fact, as adults, I am confident there are some hidden gems that all of us can benefit from.

Learning Conversations - Weeks 6 & 7
I look forward to seeing our families at the upcoming learning conversations. This is a great opportunity to check in with teaching staff, celebrate the growth in learning, and discuss strategies for further refinement. I encourage families to look over and discuss the half-yearly academic reports as well as the two Commitment to Learning reports that are all available on Compass. It will be these documents and other formative observations that will help drive the conversations in a positive direction.

Year 10 Future Directions
As we settle into the term, students across Stage 5 have been hard at work. Our Year 10 students, in particular, have been making some important decisions about their future pathways. Recently, they participated in the Year 11 Subject Information Day at MacKillop, which proved to be a valuable opportunity for all involved. They also took part in the interview process, helping to clarify their next steps.
To our Year 10s - I challenge you to begin (if you haven’t already) building strong study habits now. Many students think they can start next year, but this is too late. Consistent, positive habits formed now will set you up for a smooth and successful transition into senior studies.
Digital Footprint and Digital Citizenship – Delete, Report, Support
Recently, we’ve addressed Year 9 students on the importance of protecting our digital footprint and being responsible digital citizens. Every post, photo or comment we share online can leave a lasting impression.
We have been focusing on the simple but powerful message: Delete, Report, Support -
- Delete inappropriate or unsafe content.
- Report harmful behaviour to a trusted adult or the appropriate authority.
- Support friends by encouraging safe and respectful choices online.
This was a reminder to students that their online conduct carries significant social, emotional and legal consequences. We encourage families to continue these conversations at home, helping students to navigate the online world with respect and responsibility.
Code of Presentation
At MacKillop, the way we present ourselves reflects our pride in who we are and the respect we have for our school community. We ask for your continued support in upholding these standards each day.
For our boys:
- Arrive clean-shaven, with neat and tidy hairstyles.
- Styles such as mullets, rat tails and horse tails are not part of our presentation standards. Similarly, facial hair such as moustaches and goatees are not permitted.
For our girls:
- Students may wear plain sleeper earrings or small studs (a maximum of two in each outer ear and no bigger than the earlobe), one ring and a watch.
- Makeup is not permitted in Years 7-10.
- Artificial nails, nail polish and false eyelashes are not permitted.
Upcoming Events
The weeks ahead are filled with exciting events and opportunities for our students:
- Tuesday 19 August: Mary MacKillop Feast Day celebrations.
- Monday 25 August & Monday 1 September: Year 7–11 Learning Conversations.
We look forward to celebrating these moments with our students and families, and we thank you for the important role you play in supporting our school community.

Year 11
The “Vibe”
This Week I spoke to Year 11 about the current “vibe” in our year group. It’s not something I can put my finger on, but it feels as though a few of us are not yet putting in the effort required for HSC success. Many, many students are working very hard, they are attending afternoon homework club, and they have clear processes in place to ensure that every assignment is done to the best of their ability, given the time they have available. But there are also students who are yet to find the maturity needed to sacrifice some of their “lifestyle” in order to focus on a future.
End of Preliminary Exams are starting in Week 9, giving us only a small amount of time to get ourselves properly prepared. When I say properly prepared, I mean giving ourselves the very best chance to show what we are truly capable of, to lay a foundation on which to build up to our HSC year.
It’s about earning that cape.

I reminded them that success in studying rarely comes from bursts of last-minute effort - it’s built through steady, deliberate action. Motivation comes and goes, getting it to hang around is done by keeping your eye firmly on the prize: your goals. Over the next few weeks I encourage Year 11 to revisit their goals; to write them down, make them visible, and remind themselves of why they matter. A clear “why” turns routine study into purposeful action. However goals alone aren’t enough - you need systems. If we don’t have our systems in place to move forward, it’s time to act, and fast:
- Create a schedule that fits your life
- Break big tasks into manageable steps
- Set checkpoints to measure progress.
Snowed Under?
There is a great quote on the outside of Lisa Kable's office:
“Becoming a creature of discomfort can unlock hidden potential in many different types of learning. Summoning the nerve to face discomfort is a character skill - an especially important form of determination. It takes three kinds of courage: to abandon your tried-and-true methods, to put yourself in the ring before you feel ready, and to make more mistakes than others make attempts. The best way to accelerate growth is to embrace, seek, and amplify discomfort.”
- Adam Grant
And it also reminded me of a Ted Lasso quote:
“Going through change is like riding a horse, if you’re comfortable while you’re doing it, you’re probably doing it wrong”.
Year 11 students are transforming. They are changing from being a child to being a responsible adult who is university-ready. This transformation calls for them to change: to let go of the old and take on the new way of being. In the next few weeks, it is likely that many students will feel uncomfortable. Snowed under. They may feel like they have too much to do and not enough time to do it. As parents and teachers, in our quest to keep building the resilience of our young men and women, we will need to guide them through some of these anxious times. Being uncomfortable means you are growing and changing, it is a natural part of engaging in something difficult, and something worthwhile.
Through this time we’ll try to guide them to make good choices: To be efficient when engaging in study/homework, but also to have time out for themselves, to stick to a daily routine, connect with friends like they normally would, and most importantly, to remember their goals, maintain perspective and be kind to themselves with positive self talk.
Watch out for….
For everyone, staying in a negative mind frame for too long can start to influence our overall perspective on all parts of our lives. If you as parents, feel this is happening to your child, please reach out to our team. We are here to help guide our students through these things.

Vinnies Winter Appeal
We extend our gratitude to everyone who contributed to the Vinnies Winter Appeal by donating clothing, baked goods and gold coins. Your generosity has made a significant impact on our community.
A special thank you and congratulations go to Macey, Olivia, Lucy, and Kyla for their outstanding initiative in organising a cheese toastie fundraiser. These inspiring young women recognised a need in our community and took action by preparing and serving warm cheese toasties in exchange for winter clothing donations. They independently gathered and purchased all the necessary ingredients and materials to make this event a success. Thanks to their efforts, they collected two large bags filled with warm clothing for those in need. Their dedication and compassion have truly warmed hearts this winter, and we are incredibly proud of their contribution to this meaningful cause.

Trial Exams
Year 12 students are nearing the end of their trial exams, a crucial milestone as they approach the conclusion of their academic course. These exams, testing the breadth of their knowledge, are a significant wake-up call, highlighting strengths and areas for improvement. Many students are making excellent use of study spaces such as the local library, school study halls, or quiet corners at home, to prepare diligently.
The post-exam period is arguably the most vital phase. It provides a critical opportunity to reflect on their performance, analyse marks, and assess time management and resilience under exam pressure. This helps students identify strategies that worked and areas needing adjustment. Equally, if not more importantly, is prioritising self-care during this high-stress time. Activities like walking, running, practising mindfulness or simply taking a moment to relax can recharge their mental and emotional batteries.
Exam season is undeniably intense, and the pressure can feel overwhelming, but how students manage stress defines their growth. Encouraging balance through hobbies, exercise or time with friends and family, fosters resilience. By reflecting and recharging, students can approach future challenges, including final exams, with confidence and clarity, setting a strong foundation for success.
We are always here to support your child through this journey. If you have any questions, concerns, or simply need guidance, please don’t hesitate to reach out. You can contact the college directly or speak with me personally for assistance. Whether it’s advice on study techniques, managing stress, or planning next steps, we’re committed to helping your child succeed. Their wellbeing and academic progress are our priorities and we encourage open communication to ensure you feel supported every step of the way.
End of Year 12 Celebration Activities

Supporting Friendships in Year 7 & 8
At MacKillop, we work hard to create a welcoming community where every student feels they belong - both as learners and as valued members of our school family.
Friendship Changes and Peer Pressure:
In early high school, it’s normal for friendships to change. Students might make new friends, spend less time with old ones or try out different social groups as they work out who they are. These changes can sometimes cause feelings of worry, rejection or pressure to “fit in.”
Peer pressure can influence students to:
- copy others to be accepted;
- act in ways that don’t match their values;
- feel left out or excluded from groups.
As parents and teachers, we can help students stay true to themselves while showing kindness and respect to others.
How Parents Can Help:
Here are some simple ways you can support your young person:
1. Listen calmly. Give your young person space to share their feelings without jumping in with solutions or criticism. Ask questions like, “How did that make you feel?”
2. Talk about values. Encourage them to choose friends who share positive values, not just popularity.
3. Promote kindness. Model and encourage treating others with compassion.
4. Look for signs of struggle. If your child seems withdrawn, anxious, or avoids school, reach out to their Pastoral Care Teacher or Leader of Wellbeing for support.
5. Encourage involvement. School activities, clubs and service projects are great ways for students to make new connections.
Working Together:
We believe success is not just about learning in the classroom, it’s also about how we treat each other. By working together, home and school can help students build respectful, caring friendships where everyone can thrive.
If you have any concerns about your child’s friendships or wellbeing, please contact us. We are here to support you and your child.

SAPSS Drumline Sydney Trip
St. Agnes' Parish Drumline captures 8th consecutive national title + adds first double crown!
On Sunday, August 3rd, NSW, Victoria, & Tasmania drumlines converged on Presbyterian Ladies College in Croydon (Sydney) for the 2025 National Drumline Championships. Despite the relentless rain, the competition was fierce inside the college hall. At the end of the day, the St. Agnes' Parish Secondary Schools Senior Drumline, competing as the Port Macquarie Vanguard, took home their record-extending 8th consecutive national title after being crowned Overall Grand Champions once again. Strong results in both the mandatory "test piece" (composed by the adjudicator Dr. Michael Crawford himself) as well as their own original show titled "The Fall of Hyperion", were simply too much for this year's field, despite a noticeable improvement in quality from all competing drumlines.
In addition to the strong results from the Vanguard (who competed in the higher Division A), the Port Macquarie Brumbies junior drumline took out their first win in Division B, scoring first in both the Test Piece and their own choice, titled "Brat Pack", to take an unassailable lead over a very crowded division and earning the program their first "double crown".
In addition to their overall trophies, they took out a number of Caption Award which are given to recognise each section of the drumline:
Vanguard Snares - 1st Place
Vanguard Tenors - 2nd Place
Vanguard Basses- 1st Place
Vanguard Colour Guard - 2nd Place
Brumbies Basses - 2nd Place
Prior to the excitement of Sunday, both drumlines had the amazing opportunity to play in Newcastle for the NRLW Magic Round, before heading onwards to Sydney's Northern Beaches to take the field as part of the pre-game entertainment at 4 Pines Park, where the Manly Sea Eagles hosted the Sydney Roosters. The kids arrived home on Sunday evening, exhausted but content, filled with positive feedback, great results, and heads & hearts filled with amazing memories.

Electronic Roland Aira Workshop
On Tuesday, 29th July, Elective Music students in Years 8-11 attended Electronic Music workshops with Chris from Musical Futures International. Students were hands-on with Music Industry instruments to explore how to make and perform electronic music, such as House Music and other contemporary commercial types of music. MacKillop students will further explore the instruments, music software and 'how to' compose electronic music in their elective music classes.
Music Teachers took part in professional learning to dive deeper into the instruments and Electronic Music Making Pedagogy with Chris. One of the key pillars of this pedagogical framework is to facilitate 'tinkering' for students. We are excited to share that all MacKillop students are invited to attend 'Tinkering Thursdays' drop in sessions, every Thursday lunch 2 in the Music Department.

Representative Sport
School Sport Australia
MacKillop recently had several students represent their respective sports at the School Sport Australia Championships, which were held in Brisbane and the Gold Coast.
SSA is the culmination of state-based programs and offers the gifted and talented students the opportunity to participate in higher levels of sporting competition. These events are an integral part of the School Sport Australia program, not only for their sporting benefits, but also for the immense educational, cultural and social benefits they provide for the participants. This is the pinnacle of the School Sporting pathway, and we are immensely proud of these outstanding achievements.
Bianca Harrison - Swimming:
Bianca represented the NSW All Schools Swimming team and finished in 6th place in the 200 breaststroke, which is a fantastic result.
Having chatted with Bianca, I can tell she really enjoyed the experience. She is super keen to compete at SSA and hopefully go one step further and bag a medal.
Well done, Bianca.

Oto Ryan - AFL:
Oto represented the NSW All Schools AFL team at the School Sport Australia Championships.
The competition was fierce from the very beginning. That opening game against Victoria gave the boys a real taste of elite-level football, and despite the heartbreaking loss to Tasmania in the final quarter of the second game, Oto stepped up beautifully in the forward line, contributing crucial goals. While they narrowly missed the top bracket, their resilience shone through.
The team's convincing victory over Queensland White, followed by their triumph against ACT—where Oto was honoured with the players' player award—demonstrated just how much they had grown. But perhaps the most memorable moment came in that dramatic playoff against Queensland Maroons for 5th place. To watch them fight back from behind in that final quarter and secure victory was absolutely thrilling.
Finishing three wins from five games at such a high-calibre carnival, competing alongside future AFL stars, has been an experience Oto will treasure forever.
A great achievement Oto - well done.

Ben Romer - Netball:
Ben represented the NSW All Schools U15 AFL team at the School Sport Australia Championships.
Ben was named Player's Player for NSW at the competition, topping off a great week with NSW placing 4th overall. In its inaugural year, the competition was a great development opportunity and a very worthwhile experience.
We are very proud of you, Ben, and this great achievement.

NSW All Schools Cross Country
Congratulations to Indigo Duncan, who recently represented NSWCCC at the NSW All Schools Cross Country Championships.
Indigo competed in the 14-Year-Old Girls' 4km race, clocking 4.32 minutes on the track and placing 18th overall out of 105 competitors and 6/10 CCC.
This is an outstanding result, and you are to be commended on your perseverance in running at such a high level.
