Many families will remember our long term Parish Priest Father Leo Donnelly. Father D would have celebrated his 95th birthday yesterday. We hope Father D had a great heavenly birthday.
Year 7 2023 Orientation Day
What a week we have had at the College. It all began last Friday when we had 225 students, our incoming Class of Year 7 2023, join us for their Orientation Day. A big thank you to all MacKillop staff and students who provided the Year 6 students with a wonderful sample of what a day in the life of high school is like.
Year 12 Graduation Dinner
I would like to thank Andrea Huxley, Belinda Hadfield, Terrianne Ryan and their wonderful team for the magnificent night they provided our Year 12 2022 Graduation Class last weekend. The students, their families and all staff that attended had a fantastic evening celebrating the end of their school days.
Student Success: Lego League Regional Championships
Congratulations to the Mackillop College Coding Club who won the Regional First Lego League Championship last week. We now qualify for State finals in Sydney!
Rotary Public Speaking Winner
Congratulations to Year 10 student Seppe Beeckmans who won the Rotary Public Speaking competition. Seppe now progresses to the area finals. The adjudicators complimented Seppe on his sophisticated content (using To Kill A Mockingbird’s Boo Radley as an example of prejudices and treatment of others), his composure and sophisticated speaking skills as well as the way his speech linked back to the Rotary Club’s 4 way test or guiding principles of truth and fairness.
Families leaving MacKillop College at the end of 2022?
If your child will be leaving MacKillop College at the end of 2022 could I please ask that you notify the College as soon as possible.

Vaping: Information & Awareness
Vaping is on the rise in Australia and has become popular amongst teenagers and young adults. Alarmingly, a recent study has also shown that there is an increase in the number of primary school-aged children who are experimenting with vapes. There are many misconceptions about vapes being fairly harmless and that vapes in Australia do not contain nicotine.
We hope parents and carers use these helpful resources to:
- learn the facts about e-cigarettes and vaping;
- recognise what a vape looks like;
- understand why vaping is attractive to young people; and
- engage in positive conversations at home.
By working in partnership we hope to support our young people to make healthy choices.
Please watch this informative 2 minute video which provides some key information about vaping and e-cigarettes.
Key Information
- Vaping is the act of smoking e-cigarettes or ‘vapes’ that can look like metallic pens, USBs and other hand-held systems.
- Vapes use cartridges filled with liquids, which typically contain nicotine, artificial flavouring, and various chemicals which can be harmful to the developing body.
- Research shows that 1 in 5 young people have vaped and nearly 80% of young people say it is easy to get a vape illegally at a shop or online.
- Nicotine is especially addictive for young brains. It can cause long-lasting negative effects on brain development and can include impaired attention, learning, memory and changes in mood.
- You can find out more about vaping from NSW Health.
Conversation Starters at Home
Start conversations about vaping with your child early. You could consider the following questions or conversation starters:
- Are a lot of kids vaping at your school? Are your friends vaping? Be sure you don’t react, just listen.
- What do you think about vaping?
You may hear your child say that vaping is harmless. It’s important to share some good information with your child about the impacts of vaping.
- Do you know what is in vapes?
Share with them that they’ve tested vapes and they do not contain only water vapor and flavouring. Vapes can contain very high levels of nicotine and other toxic chemicals that damage lungs.
Why is it attractive?
Young people can be drawn to vaping for a number of different reasons including peer pressure, accessibility and affordability, the belief that vaping is harmless and curiosity. Sometimes a family member who vapes can also influence children and young people to try vaping. This short video provides some insights into why vaping is attractive to young people and is important viewing before parents and carers use the conversation starters at home.
Conversation Starters
Be ready to have these conversations with your child with a sense of calmness and interest in what they have to say. Be ready to listen to their responses without jumping in too quickly to correct them. Choose your timing wisely, perhaps during a relaxed moment at home, when driving somewhere together, or when no other stress or distractions are present.
- Why do you think more children and teens are vaping? Listen to understand. Your child may mention one of the reasons listed above or have another This conversation starter opens the door to healthy dialogue.
- Could you confidently say no if you were offered a vape? How could you do this? Help your young person create an ‘exit plan’ if they are offered a vape.
- How do you think the person offering you the vape would react to you saying no? How might that make you feel about this friendship?
Now might be a good time to talk about what your child values in their friends.
Peer pressure can be powerful, so coming up with realistic action steps and practising them together in a safe environment will prepare and empower your child to make good choices when it matters. Remind them that not everyone is vaping. There are many young people making healthy choices to say no.
How to Support my Child if they are Vaping
Although advertising and peers can heavily influence your teen’s decisions, the impact you have as a parent carries enormous weight. Research has found that parental involvement and a positive outlook can make a significant difference in healthy decision making, both now and in the future.
- Take a Health Approach: If you discover that your teen is vaping, address it as you would any other risk to your child’s health. Try to resist the urge to lecture, yell or punish your child. It is important to keep the lines of communication open and show your child that you are concerned about their health and safety. Although purchasing vapes containing nicotine without a prescription is illegal in Australia, many vapes labelled as nicotine-free do contain nicotine. Your child may need support to stop vaping as nicotine is very addictive. The more your child vapes, the more both the brain and body will get used to having nicotine, and the harder it is to go without it. When a person stops vaping, even for a short period, they can experience withdrawal, including strong cravings, irritability, fatigue, headache, sleeplessness and difficulty concentrating.
- Conversation Starters: Make sure your child recognises how much you care about them and that the conversation is coming from a place of unconditional love, support and concern for their wellbeing. Use the conversation starters below to understand if your child may be continuing to vaping to avoid withdrawal symptoms. Do you continue to vape even though you want to stop or think it’s hurting you in some way? Do you feel anxious or irritable when you want to use your vape but can’t? Do thoughts about vaping interrupt you when you are focused on other activities? Do you vape at school? How often? Have you ever tried to stop vaping but couldn’t? Do you feel like you have lost control over your vaping?
- Support to Quit Vaping: Read this helpfulinfographic for suggestions about how to support your child to quit vaping. (Source; smokefree.gov & NSW Health TobaccoFree)

We still have a high number of items in lost property for collection. If you recognise any of the below items please collect them from the front office. Any items unclaimed by the end of the month will be donated to charity or disposed of where appropriate.
Year 7
Over the course of this term, I have visited various classes and seen some fantastic undertakings occur with students engaged in learning. This is a great reminder of the reason why we are all here at MacKillop College. We are all here to learn and make the most out of what is on offer at the College.
As we draw closer to the end of the term, it’s important that every Year 7 student "continue strong" and strive to be the best version of themselves: to establish good working habits; maintain a zest for learning, and work well with others.
We can remind them of the adage: “Good, Better, Best. Never Let It Rest. ‘Til Your Good is Better and Your Better Is Best.” By putting in their best effort every day towards every class and each social interaction, they are setting themselves up for the best chance of personal success. Every positive effort counts.
At times, we need reminding that our actions have a direct impact on our own learning and the learning of others. I encourage Year 7 to focus on progress and to continue strong.
I encourage a conversation at home to guide your child to ‘check in’:
- Am I prepared for class?
- Am I ready to learn?
- Do I follow the teacher's instructions?
- What do I contribute to the class?
- Am I impacting my classes in positive or negative ways? How?
- Do I give my best in class?

Camp
Finally, after all the cancellations over the past couple of years, the Year 8 group had the opportunity to attend camp and it did not disappoint. The group had a blast with the activities of bushwalking, Learn to Surf - with Port Macquarie Surf School, survivor team building, a Gaol tour, orienteering/rogaining and team building activities. The highlight for me was seeing the Year 8 group being pushed out of their comfort zone, embracing new challenges and truly “finding happiness in making others happy”. Many thanks to Alison Montgomery for all of her planning and the awesome staff who made these memories possible.
Well Done
It's great to see so many smiles, showing how happy students were with their efforts in achieving success in their latest Science topic test. They did such a great job that they were awarded with a Merit Certificate and a medal! Well done on the hard work and effort everyone.
Congratulations
Congratulations to Brianna Waller who has received a Silver Principal’s Award.

Year 9 Canberra Excursion
Please find below an account from a Year 9 Student, Miya Freeman, of their experience on the Canberra excursion last week:
From 31 October to 3 November, Year 9 students travelled to Canberra to explore and learn about our nation's history and contributions to science, politics, sport, art, and more!
On the way to Canberra, we stopped at Luna Park for three hours of fun! We experienced hair-raising drops, twists and turns, swings and spins, and other thrills!
While in Canberra we visited a variety of venues including:
- Parliament House.
- The Museum of Australian Democracy (Old Parliament House).
- The Australian War Memorial.
- Questacon.
- CSIRO Discovery (Commonwealth Scientific Industrial Research Organisation).
- Australian Institute of Sport.
- Canberra Rock Climbing.
- National Museum of Australia.
- National Gallery.
When returning home, we also visited St Mary's Cathedral, ANZAC Memorial Hyde Park, and the Kokoda Memorial Track at Concord. Students that attended the 80th anniversary of Kokoda had the honour of being in the presence of four WWII veterans; It was inspiring to listen to their stories and their experiences.
We learnt so much in those four days, ranging from how bills are passed in Parliament House to how Aerogard evolved since originally being a repellent for sheep blowflies. Overall, it was a privilege to have been given the opportunity to explore what Australia's capital city has to offer.
Miya Freeman - Year 9 SRC
To the parents and carers, thank you for your help in preparing our young people for the week away. You would have been proud to witness their punctuality, maturity, reverence and respect during all of our activities and tours.
To the staff who accompanied our Year 9 students, thank you for giving up your time to take care of our students whilst away. It is a huge ask to be away from your family and friends for four days. Without your selflessness, the excursion would simply not go ahead. A huge thanks needs to go to Andrew Evans for his flawless organisation of yet another Canberra excursion and to Sharee Fletcher who assisted in all the excursion preparations.
Also, of course, Year 9 students. Thank you for being part of our Year 9 excursion. This is the first time we have been away as a year group and I would call it a great success. I am sure you have many memories to reflect on and will continue to recall these for some time. Your maturity and respect was always present and this is a credit to you all.
It was a pleasure to be able to take almost 200 students away on this excursion and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Congratulations
Congratulations to Matilda Jones who has received a Silver Principal’s Award.

Senior Retreat
Last week our Year 11 students finally achieved a five year dream, they went on the Senior Retreat for three days! After years of cancelled camps (Years 8 and 9), the Year 10 Retreat last year and even their Fun Day at Stoney Aqua Park last term, they finally got to experience what many others before them have done.
Due to the large numbers in Year 11 the year group was split into two groups and two locations - St Francis Retreat at Bonny Hills, and Stuarts Point Convention Centre. Three fun filled days were had by all with the focus being on our Year 12 theme “Be calm and full of hope”.
The Retreat not only provided the students and staff with the opportunity to build on existing relationships but develop new ones as well, with a range of activities held in both small and large groups centered around relationships.
Highlights from the Retreat included the Candle Ceremony and affirmations, the Vinnies Fashion Parade and the games of 44 Home! The students were incredibly grateful for the opportunity to get away from the pressures of school and have the opportunity to spend time with their peers and staff.
I would like to sincerely thank Marg Gobius, our Leader of Evangelisation, who worked tirelessly to ensure both Retreats went ahead, the staff who gave up their own time with their families to attend, and the hard working staff at both the St Francis Retreat in Bonny Hills and the Stuarts Point Convention Centre.

Wellbeing
Some studies have indicated that the average Australian spends five and a half hours a day on their phones. Across your entire life that’s 17 years, or a third of your waking life spent on your phone. Imagine if we could at least halve this figure and dedicate an extra two and a half hours a day on physical activity. What impact would this then have on the health and wellbeing of our young people?
While this most certainly applies to our children, it is also relevant to adults and parents. Consider how reducing your mobile phone use could impact on family life, your health and your relationships.
Here are some tips to assist both parents and children in reducing mobile phone hours and increasing time for other activities:
- Turn off all non-essential notifications so your phone isn’t constantly interrupting you.
- Social media feeds typically distract phone users, so set aside a block of time per day to look at your social media feeds.
- Use the screen time functions on your phone to set limits on daily phone use.
- To improve your sleep quality, don’t keep your phone beside your bed at night. Preferably charge it in a different room.
- If you’re studying/working, put your phone in a different room to keep it from distracting you.
- Set a curfew for mobile phone use each day. Recommend getting children to switch off devices at 8:00pm and charge them overnight.
- Avoid mobile phone use when sharing meals as a family.
- Create 'tech free' times or zones within your home.
So if you and your children could implement some of these strategies and earn back that spare two and a half hours each day. What would you do? More time for homework, beach time, walking the dog, housework, family time and the list goes on.
This is something we continue to discuss with students in PDHPE lessons and pastoral care groups and is a very big reason we have our current mobile phone policy in place. I encourage you to please discuss and review your child’s current mobile phone use as only a small change could result in big gains.

Berg Shield Cricket
After defeating St Paul’s College Kempsey in Week 4, our U15's cricket team are into the third round of the state wide knockout T20 competition - the Berg Shield.
St Paul’s won the toss and batted first but could only accumulate a total of 40 runs. The chief destroyer for MacKillop College was opening bowler George Worner who took the first five wickets inside the first five overs of St Paul’s innings. George finished with the impressive figures of 5/11. In all, MacKillop used eight bowlers with Ben Spencer (2), Harley Cottom (1), Mitchell White (1) and Cooper Sheldon (1) sharing the remaining wickets. Freycin Hostettler, Lane Jordan and Kale Haese also bowled well without taking a wicket.
It only took the MacKillop batters four overs to chase down the small total despite losing captain Freycin Hostettler second ball. Fellow opener Jack Ryan and number three Harley Cottom batted aggressively to reach the score with ease. Jack finished with 13 not out and Harley 9 not out. They were helped by 19 generous extras from the St Paul’s bowlers.
The MacKillop College team is: Freycin Hostettler, George Worner, Harley Cottom, Jack Ryan, Mitchell White, Ben Spencer, Kale Haese, Alex Ball, Patrick Field, Cooper Sheldon, Max Robb, Lane Jordan, Riley Bates and Archie Hawken.

NSW CCC Basketball
The MacKillop College Year 9/10 Boys Basketball team tasted success at the recent NSW CCC Basketball Championships. The boys started the tournament strong, enjoying wins against Marist College Eastwood (28-15), St Joseph’s College Lochinvar (39-32), Xavier College Albury (31-18) on the first day.
The team started the second day with strong wins against O’Connor College Armidale (33-20). This placed the team in the quarter finals against St Edwards Gosford. Another strong performance saw the boys run out winners 33-16. A good performance in the semi final against St Charbels Punchbowl (38-20) saw the team up against the strong St Dominic’s Kingswood. In a tough game, St Dominic’s tied the game in the last minute sending the game into overtime. The MacKillop boys played strongly in overtime to round out winners (36-29). Congratulations to the team on becoming NSW CCC champions. A big thank you to the parents who travelled and helped out over the tournament. The team included Sam Blain, Toby Harper, Xavier Proud, Riley Harmer, Blake Collins, Kaden Lawler, Blake Romer, Malachy Kelleher and Brayden Champion.

NSW Netball Schools Cup State Final – 7/8 Boys
Congratulations to all of the boys that represented MacKillop College at the Schools Cup State Finals.
The team played brilliantly and they should be very proud of their effort. We were in a very tough pool and we were narrowly defeated by San Clemente Mayfield, Xavier High School and St John’s Dubbo. These results led the team to the classification finals where they played Nowra High School. They experienced a very convincing win (14 -1) which resulted in the team placing 7th in the State.
What an amazing effort! All of the team are to be congratulated on their determination, sportsmanship and enthusiasm.
The team consisted of: Riley Bates, Flynn Burrage, Jack Ryan and Harley Cottom (Defence) Jesse Andrews, Jack Merrick and Sam Ramke (Centre Court) Cruz Lewis and Noah Pociask (Shooters).
Congratulations to Noah Pociask who was selected by his teammates as players’ player.

NSW Netball Schools Cup State Final – 9/10 Girls
I have had so many moments this year as a proud Coach and Teacher at MacKillop College. This experience was just another one added to my list.
Our year 9 and 10 girls seemed to have a great time at the State Netball Championships, held at Netball Central in Homebush on Wednesday 2 November 2022.
We started the day with a tough game against All Saints school Maitland. Our girls lost, but not without a fight. We ended up coming second in our division overall. Unfortunately, this meant that we needed to play the team that came first in the other division in the Semi Finals, which was the amazing Westfield Sports High school. I was in awe, as were our girls. Their coach is an ex National player, they were an exceptional team to watch, and to play against.
We ended up playing St Mary's Star of the Sea to finish in either 3rd or 4th place. We ended up with 4th place in the State. That is still SO amazing!
We lost player Andie McGrath who is in exchange in Spain at the moment, and so Lane Jordan in Year 8 was asked to come and join our team. Lane was an outstanding centre court player who stepped up to the mark without a flinch. Shooting was superb all day by both Tallara Duck and Piper Wilson. So grateful to all of our players, Emma Burge, Emily Ryals, Brianna Moloney, Ella Hogan, Lara Inman and Claire Pieren.
I was so proud of the way our girls held their own. With so much strength in defence by both Lara, Claire and Ella, there were games that made it really hard for the other shooters. Overall to place 4th in the State in Netball was a wonderful outcome. I will remember this trip forever and I was so happy to have been a part of this team.
Players voted for their Most Valuable player on the day. Emma Burge was voted MVP, closely followed by Tallara Duck.
The Coaches award was also Emma Burge. In true Emma spirit, she did not give up. Not once! So much strength and precision in her playing skills. Well done Emma!

NSW Netball Schools Cup State Final – 9/10 Boys
To attend the Netball NSW Schools Cup State Finals means our team has made it through to the top 8 teams in this statewide competition. It is the third and final level in a competition open to schools across all school sectors so we can say that we are very proud of our Year 9 and 10 boys team for making it to this event.
With that said, the competition at this event is tough and it was great for our boys to be able to experience this level of competition which comes when we are able to travel further afield, making this venture a worthwhile experience for our students. The boys were very competitive at this event. They had 2 wins and 2 losses which had them finish 5th in the state, however, they only lost by 1 goal to the team who won silver.
The boys who played in Sydney were Riley Harmer (c), Xavier Proud, Toby Harper, Tana Marino, Cooper Lorger, Tobias Toohey, Sam Blain, Josh Bell and Tom Ryan.
Players Player for this event, as voted by the boys, was Riley Harmer who led by example and always gives his all.
Coaches Award for being most improved over the season goes to Tobias Toohey who made an impressive amount of turnovers in his WD position.
That wraps up school netball for 2022. It has been a most enjoyable year working with this team.
Michelle Marino - Coach
Downie Shield
Having won our first round match through a forfeit, our Downie Shield side played Saint John Paul II, Coffs Harbour in the second round. Our opposition won the toss and elected to bat. Our opening bowlers, Vaughan Munro and Josh Newton removed their top order batsmen with good support from our team. Their middle order rallied and though and were bowled out for 186 which was an achievable target.
Our innings didn’t get off to the start we wished, with our top order batsmen being removed quite quickly. Building partnerships seemed difficult for our side, with Lennox Jensen top scoring with 37. Though we were on track with the run rate, we eventually were bowled out in the thirtieth over for 122.
Stand out performers on the day were Archie Kay 3/30 and Vaughan Munro 3/31 from their ten overs and Lennox Jensen 0/8 from four overs and 37 runs.
Many thanks to all players involved for their efforts on the day.
